SYNOBSIS
Australian athlete Ian Roberts was – and still is – considered one of the most revered and feared forwards to ever play the game of rugby league. In 1995 he shocked the code, country and world, when he announced that he was gay.
LIGHT – THE IAN ROBERTS STORY is a “boots and all” account of the hard yards and turmoil that coming out took on his life, both on and off the field. Behind the headlines, Ian was and still is hiding many aspects of himself, from the abuse he suffered to addiction and to a tragic friendship with a young homeless man whose body was found years later.
Ian is a key participant in this film both as the subject and as a producer, allowing for an unvarnished look at his life. The storytelling approach will feature interviews with Ian, fresh archival footage and Ian participating in re-enactments of his most difficult experiences giving an emotional intensity that is uplifting, powerful, raw and revelatory.
