Short Docos to lead the trend in 2025
WHAT MAKES A DOCUMENTARY SHORT?
Usually limited to a single clip or episode, short form doco video duration will typically range from 5-15 minutes in length but are still under 40 minutes long. Short documentaries are often utilised for online platforms, film festivals, or as part of a larger series
WHY THEY ARE SET TO TREND?
Short form video documentaries are preferred by creators and audiences these days. They can still convey a powerful message with the upside of keeping the attention of viewers that may not want to commit to a longer documentary have a wide reach potential and can be shared easily online.
It's also a simpler way for creators to hit revenue targets set by multiple platforms.
HOW TO CREATE A GOOD ONE?
Prep the story first! During preproduction, create a rough script, commit to a tone or style, cement the messaging and ‘plot’ out a basic three act structure before filming.
GET TO THE POINT
Within the first minutes, tease or share the goal with your audience if you can, jump straight to the point. Audiences have short attention spans so entice quickly.
ARE WE WATCHING OR JOINING?
Observation documentary is a type of documentary focused on non-interrupted observation of real-life people and events. Think fly on the wall style. In this style, filmmakers aim to capture events as they unfold naturally, without interference or manipulation. Alternatively, break the sequences with short piece to camera interviews to fill in story details and cover gaps in time.
RAISE THE STAKES
Build drama. Short-form documentary length is not that long, so you don’t have much time to reel in an audience. Getting an audience to care doesn’t only necessarily mean garnering a tear-jerking reaction, it could engage, excite, anger or thrill.
WRAP IT UP
Giving a short form documentary an end is necessary and allows your audience to feel rewarded for their time. Refer back to how the piece opened in the opening scenes and reflect. For updates, add end frame tiles to conclude a story and end with quick production credits.
